Cefradine BP


Cefad® 500 Capsule: Each capsule contains Cefradine BP 500mg.

Cefad® Powder for Suspension: After reconstitution each 5ml suspension contains Cefradine BP 125mg.


Cefad® (cefradine) is a cephalosporin antibiotic with broad spectrum bactericidal activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is also highly active against most strains of penicillinase producing Staphylococci . The organisms sensitive to Cefradine are Gram-Positive: Staphylococci (both penicillin sensitive and resistant strains), streptococci including both Streptococcus phyogenes (beta haemolytic) and group D Streptococci (enterococci) and Streptococcus pneumonia, Gram-nagative: E.coli and Staphylococcus aureus are also susceptible.

Cefad® (Cefradine) is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Absorption is delayed by presence of food although the total amount absorbed is not appreciably altered.


Cefad® is indicated for the treatment of following infections: Respiratory tract infection.
ENT infections: Pharyngitis, Sinusitis, Otitis media, Tonsillitis, Laryngo-tracheo bronchitis, Acute and chronic bronchitis, lobar and bronchopneumonia.
Urinary tract infections: Cystitis, Urethritis, Pyelonephritis, Prostatitis, Epididymitis. Skin and soft tissue infection: Abscess, Cellulitis, Furunculossis, Impetigo.
Gastro-Intestinal Tract Infection: Bacillary dysentery, enteritis, peritonitis.
Skin and soft tissue infection: Abscess, cellulitis, furunculosis, impetigo.
Surgical Prophylaxis: it is also used in perioperative prophylactic administration (pre-operatively, Intra-operative and post-operatively). In caesarean section, intra-operative (after clamping the umbilical cord) and post-operative use may reduce the incidence of certain post-operative infections.

Dosage & Administration

For adults: The usual dosage range is 1-2 gm daily in 2 to 4 equally divided doses. Severe or chronic infections may require larger doses up to 4 gm daily in divided doses or as advised by the physician.
For Children: The usual dose is 25-50mg/kg/day given in 2 to 4 equally divided doses. For otitis media daily dose from 75-100 mg/kg in divided doses every 6-12 hours are recommended.


Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin. Precautions: Known hypersensitivity to penicillin. Use in pregnancy: Although animal study have not shown any teratogenicity, safety in pregnancy has not been established. It is present in breast milk and should be used with caution in lactating mothers.


Cefad® (cefradine) Capsules should be stored in a cool dry place. Powder for suspension: Store in a cool dry place. After reconstitution use within 14 days if stored in refrigerator of 7 days at room temperature.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Although there have been no reports of adverse effect on the fetus, safety of use during pregnancy has not been definitely established. The drug should be used during pregnancy only clearly indicated. Cephalosporins are distributed into breast milk and the drug should be used with caution in nursing women.

Side Effect

Rarely, Cephradine may induce a hypersensitivity reaction and gastro-intestinal disturbance which include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, glossitis, heartburn, dizziness, tightness in the chest, vaginitis, candida overgrowth, urticarial, skin rashes, joint pains, oedema. Mild transient eosinophilia, leucopenia and neutropenia, positive direct coombs test and pseudomembranous colitis have been reported.


Keep in cool dry place and protect from light. Keep out of reach of children.

Cefad® Powder for suspension: Bottles containing powder for preparation of 100ml syrup, when reconstituted each 5ml contains Cephradine BP 125mg.
